First US state bans bisphenol-A in baby bottles

12-May-2009

US environmental groups have reported that Minnesota became the first US state to pass legislation banning the use of bisphenol-A in baby bottles and sippy cups when state Governor Tim Pawlenty signed the law on Friday. NGOs said California and Connecticut are poised to consider similar measures this week, while similar Bills are pending in Michigan and New York.

Earlier this year the six main baby bottle companies in the USA decided voluntarily to stop using bisphenol-A in baby bottles (CW 12 March 2009).

According to Minnesota NGO Healthy Legacy, Governor Pawlenty also signed the state Toxic Free Kids Act, which requires the state health department to "prioritise and evaluate chemicals used in consumer products based on their toxicity".
