Revised EU eco-label Regulation published in Official Journal

01-Feb-2010

The revised EU eco-label Regulation, agreed in November last year, has been published in the Official Journal. The new regulation states that the eco-label should aim at substituting hazardous substances by safer substances, wherever technically possible.

It also states that the label may not be awarded to goods containing either:

  • Substances, preparations or mixtures that are toxic, hazardous to the environment, carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMR), according to the classification, labelling and packaging Regulation
  • Goods containing substances subject to authorisation under REACH

However, the Commission might consider products that fall into these categories if they have a significantly higher overall environment performance compared with other goods of the same category and substitution is not technically feasible.
