European governments agree to tackle toxic chemicals in pact to reduce adverse health impacts

12-Mar-2010

An environment free of toxic chemicals is one of a number of commitments made by governments attending the European region of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health in Parma, Italy this week. Delegates from 53 countries signed a declaration pledging to reduce adverse health impacts related to a range of environmental threats over the next decade.

In September, Member States will gather in Moscow for a session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe to endorse the outcomes of the Parma conference through a resolution.

The European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) joined forces with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to host a side event focusing on partnerships and roles for all parties. “Successfully integrating health in all policies means going beyond traditional environment and health considerations,” said Gernot Klotz, head of research and innovation at CEFIC.
