| Company Background |
Brixham Environmental Laboratory (BEL), provides a specialised service to the chemical industry and its parent company AstraZeneca. BEL can perform the full range of environmental testing required for REACH registration, plus Chemical Safety Report preparation. With close links to industry, BEL delivers a superior service for our clients, not just in terms of technical excellence and competitive pricing, but by anticipating the future requirements of new testing methods.
The REACH Regulations place a greater emphasis on the assessment of a chemical's Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) properties. BEL has the expertise and resources to carry out many of the in vitro methods which are recommended in support of the assessment of bioaccumulation.
We offer innovative approaches to the assessment of environmental effects, ecotoxicity and environmental fate of new and existing substances in support of the necessary notification dossiers. We offer modelling, consultancy and information services, plus analysis for Occupational Exposure Limits, and analysis of biological samples with metabolite identification.

Environmental Monitoring
To assess the significance of any observed environmental change or impact, a range of statistical programmes are used. PRIMER, ECOSYS, TWINSPAN and RIVPACS packages enable analysis of data using a wide range of current techniques.
As well as collaborating with Ecospan in the field to provide a complete solution, BEL also offers a project management and data interpretation/reporting service. Reports can range from non-technical explanations of the results to detailed scientific documents suitable for presentation to regulatory authorities depending on the customer’s requirements.
- Risk assessment (environmental)
- Brixham Environmental Laboratory has access to a wide range of software and data interpretation tools such as the ECETOC TRA or EUSES risk assessment modules. As an example of higher tier risk assessment the catchment scale risk assessment software tool GREAT-ER is also available at Brixham Environmental Laboratory to provide spatially and temporally varying concentration profiles in river systems.
