Chesar chemical safety assessment and reporting tool available
The first version of the chemical safety assessment and reporting (Chesar) tool has been launched by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The agency notes that the tool is designed to help companies automate their chemical safety assessments (CSA) and ultimately the chemical safety reports (CSR), which are required for many substances’ REACH registration dossiers.
Chesar provides the structure for information used to generate exposure scenarios. It also contains data exchange functionalities which aim to facilitate the re-use of all or part of assessments already carried out by the registrant or prepared by industry associations. This, says ECHA, will support cross-industry standardisation of the description of uses and the safe conditions of use.
The agency is encouraging registrants to test the tool and provide feedback for the next upgrade, which is scheduled in July 2010. Full generation of CSRs will then be available – the current version does provide this function, or the exposure scenario for the extended safety data sheet.
