Joint Research Centre reviews BPA assessments

21-Jul-2010

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published Bisphenol A and baby bottles: challenges and perspectives, a review of various risk assessments concerning bisphenol A (BPA). The report’s authors note that most of the current uncertainties surrounding the safety of BPA derive from diverging opinions on the reliability of studies carried out with different methodologies. They observe that future toxicological studies aimed at reducing these uncertainties will have a higher probability of success if they are agreed in international collaboration between academic laboratories and governmental bodies, and if they are carried out under the supervision of an international panel of independent experts.
The report also notes that considering that some BPA-containing products, in particular polycarbonate baby feeding bottles, are already being banned in some countries and being progressively and voluntarily phased out by the industry, it would be prudent to assess the safety of BPA-free substitute materials.
