NGOs lobby against IEC standard on electronics safety
28-Mar-2008
A new international standard - IEC 62368 - setting safety requirements for audio/visual, information and communciation technology equipment will unnecessarily and massively increase the use of halogenated flame retardants, according to the Gothenburg-based International Chemicals Secretariat (ChemSec). It is calling on national electronic standards bodies and stakeholders to block the IEC standard when it comes up for a vote next month. It is also lobbying for them to vote against amendments to two other IEC standards - 60065 and 60950-1 - which would introduce the same requirement to pass an open flame safety test.
