Title Module 13 - Use of SDSs in Risk Assessments
Organiser Chemical Hazards Communication Society (CHCS)
Location London
Details

It is a legal requirement under the Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW), the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres (DSEAR) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations for employers to undertake risk assessments for the activities being carried out in the workplace. Although for activities involving hazardous chemicals these assessments will relate mainly to controlling exposure to employees and others, there will also be other situations to consider.

A major reason for preparing safety data sheets is for communicating to those handling dangerous products the hazards within these products. Since SDSs are the prime source of hazard information by which risks can be assessed, it is essential that they are clearly written to allow meaningful interpretation by a wide range of recipients.

This module is intended for those who produce SDSs, to better enable them to understand the needs of those undertaking risk, and particularly, COSHH assessments. It may also be of benefit to those wishing to interpret information within the SDS for these assessments.
