European researchers call for harmonised nanomaterials safety assessment with US
28 March 2011 / Europe, United States
The director of the EU Joint Research Centre's (JRC) Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP), Elke Anklam, gave an opening presentation at a workshop on the environmental, health and safety concerns related to nanomaterials and nanotechnology-based products in Washington DC earlier this month. She emphasised the need for harmonisation of safety assessment methods, an adequate definition of nanomaterials and a suitable transition process from research on new technologies to their inclusion in legislation.
The workshop, organised by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, involved European and US scientists, policymakers and industry researchers and was held in Washington in early March.
