Details

The company

Chemical Watch provides businesses worldwide with the information and perspectives they need to safely manage chemicals in products. We provide a 360-degree view of this agenda, impartially reporting on the actions and opinions of all stakeholders in our community. Our company has a strong shared sense of purpose, fuelled by expert and motivated staff who want to make a difference with their work.

CWR continues to enjoy strong global year-on-year growth which is forecast to continue in the next few years. It has more than 50 staff, most based in the UK, but also including 4 in the DC area. We are looking for an individual with drive, enthusiasm and passion. In return, you will find CWR a stimulating place to work and progress your career.

The role

The North America deputy desk editor (DDE) is a new position that is being created in response to the significant rise in regulatory activity over the past 12 months, especially regarding implementation of TSCA. Reporting to the North America Desk Editor, the DDE will be an experienced self-starter – ideally who knows TSCA inside out – and who will help the newsdesk track daily chemical regulatory developments, identify the ‘must write’ articles that our readers need, write articles of their own and edit reporters’ stories. You will need to develop good contacts in business, government and NGOs, and collaborate with our wider news and analyst teams to ensure all our North America-related content is insightful, accurate and valuable.

The candidate

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of TSCA and its implementation Rules, and other US and Canadian chemicals legislation, as well as US state-level regulation.
  • A proven track record of writing clear, accurate and insightful articles that address the information needs of regulatory compliance professionals in the chemicals industry and downstream sectors
  • Good understanding of the compliance challenges facing companies impacted by TSCA and other regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability and experience to help the Desk Editor develop and mentor less experienced writers/policy analysts
  • Experience of public speaking and a willingness to moderate conference sessions, webinars and other events
  • High levels of professionalism and personal drive, with the ability to work remotely
  • Well organised, good at prioritising and a close communicator with the rest of the newsdesk
  • Flexibility to travel within the US and worldwide on an occasional basis
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability and desire to network and make contacts

Duties & responsibilities

Your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Keeping up to date on a daily basis with developments and announcements
  • Writing news articles throughout the week, plus a few longer feature articles over the course of the year
  • Help the Desk Editor brief the North America reporter and freelancers on stories. Deputise for the Desk Editor in their absence
  • Editing articles written by other news desk writers
  • Working cooperatively with the other North America newsdesk team members, maintaining good communication, especially with the Desk Editor
  • Developing a deep knowledge of CWR’s products and services, and the needs of its customers
