Safe use pictograms published for Sumi system

The Downstream Users of Chemicals Co-ordination Group (Ducc) has published seven pictograms for use with its 'Sumi' system for generating safe use information for mixtures.

The aim of the system is to improve communication between suppliers of chemical mixtures and end users via the exposure scenarios provided in SDSs. Operational conditions and risk management measures are standardised with a focus on the product's application rather than its chemical composition.

The pictograms are for use in the risk management measures section of the Sumi template and indicate the required personal protective equipment.

Ducc says that its members decided that pictograms were "the simplest, most efficient and most understandable" way of communicating the information to professional and industrial workers.

There are pictograms for: air fed mask, apron, dust mask, filter mask, gloves, goggles, and protective clothing. All are available for download as image files (JPG, PNG, PDF) from the Ducc website.

The Sumi system is one of a range of tools developed by the the Exchange Network on Exposure Scenarios (Enes), a multi-stakeholder initiative established by Echa. The network published its updated work programme to 2020 in May.
