About this job The Environmental Safety Technical Expert will be a key member of a new group being established in the Product Safety function. With a focus on supporting Early Stage Crop Protection Research, the Environmental Safety Technical Expert will support the Technical Lead in evaluating, delivering and implementing new technologies and capabilities to identify and evaluate potential environmental safety concerns to be used in conjunction with existing approaches to steer chemical design and project prioritisation. They will also be involved in scouting new technologies in an area of specialism.
To succeed you will have an active interest and awareness of state-of-the-art science developments in the Environmental Safety research area (ecotoxicology, environmental fate), and experience of e.g. in vitro methodologies, working with model system and/or translation of observations from full scale studies to proxy systems. We are looking for a motivated and scientifically curious individual who also has the ability to consider the practicalities of deploying the approaches for regular use in research projects.
Monitor and anticipate technical developments in predictive science for ecotoxicology and environmental fate and evaluate their potential utility in Early Stage projects (incl. chemical design-related insights). Validate and implement those of interest, influencing stakeholders to ensure success.
Work closely with other members of the Syngenta CP research community (including experts within Product Safety, Chemistry, Biology and Bioscience) to understand shared challenges and collaborate on identifying solutions and new ways of working.
Support the development of a research mind set for addressing early stage research challenges (e.g. through modelling the desired behaviour in project and technical expert teams)
Give presentations at internal meetings, within the wider scientific and regulatory communities in order to support the scientific credibility of Syngenta
Work closely with other members of the Syngenta Product Safety Early stage Research team and wider Crop Protection research community to ensure we have the right capability and long-term strategy
Knowledge and experience required
Masters or PhD level (Biology, Chemistry, Soil Science, Physics, Environmental Chemistry/Fate, Ecotoxicology, Agricultural Science) or equivalent industrial experience
Knowledge of the environmental fate and/or ecotoxicology of organic compounds
Knowledge in at least one of the areas: predictive science for ecotoxicology or environmental fate, ecotoxicology or environmental fate studies, environmental fate or ecological modelling, Ecotox or e-fate dossier production
Knowledge of the environmental risk assessment requirements and ideally pesticide regulations would be beneficial for the role
English is the working language, other languages are desirable
